Little Story of HCAPC
by Dr. George C. Wang
early 1994, I had the opportunity to participate in a painting exhibition called
by Mr. T. C. Sun. The exhibition named “Houston Chinese Amateur Fine Art
Exhibition” was held from 2/5 to 2/12 at the Chinese Culture Center in
Houston. There were eight artists participating in the event with a total of
more than forty paintings in exhibition. The event was surprisingly successful
receiving terms of high commendation as well as publicity.
the months after the exhibition, however, everything fell into silence. The
beautiful art works, the dazzling colors and, most of all, our art-loving
friends were all gone without a trace. It seemed to me that all the good things
had gone by too soon to be true. One day, I called up T. C. telling him what I
felt and asked him if he would like to set up a permanent painting club. T. C.
endorsed my idea enthusiastically and promised to arrange a meeting as soon as
possible. On an autumn day, 1994, an organization meeting was held at Ms. Hui-Yu
Dai’s home. Except three of the original artists who were unable to
participate, presented at the meeting were T. C. Sun, Hui-Yu Dai, Janice Chen,
Helen Wang and myself. We all expressed the desire for a painting club and
elected Mr. T. C. Sun as president. This was indeed a day that the Houston
Chinese Amateur Paining Club was born.
